At East Bay Housing Organizations, we believe that everyone deserves a safe, stable, and affordable place to call home.
Today, we want to emphasize the word “safe” and reaffirm our belief that everyone has the right to feel safe in their homes, communities, places of work, places of worship – and while exercising their rights to free speech, assembly, and peaceful protest.
We have seen time and time again community members who are peacefully observing or protesting federal actions be met with unwarranted aggression and violence. We are deeply saddened and outraged by the escalating violence perpetrated by US Customs & Border Patrol (CBP) and Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in Minnesota and across the country. The recent killings of Alex Pretti and Renee Nicole Good follow months of intimidation and terror in Minneapolis and beyond. In 2025, 32 people died while in ICE custody, and already this year, there have been at least nine deaths related to immigration law enforcement – including the shooting death of Keith Porter in California.
EBHO supports and encourages community members to build power through collective action and community care. Speaking up and showing out are the hallmarks of a healthy democracy and robust civil society engagement, and we must stridently defend these rights.
In whatever capacity you are able and comfortable, we hope you will join us in turning out at local actions and events, supporting organizers in Minnesota, and learning more about how we can protect the most vulnerable members of our communities. EBHO, like many of our community members and peer organizations, will participate in the general strike this Friday, January 30 in solidarity with brave Minnesotans to demand accountability and the withdrawal of federal agents.
With the Super Bowl coming to the Bay Area in less than two weeks, and the increased threat of ICE and other federal agents, the whole country will be watching, and it’s up to us to demonstrate our values and commitment to maintaining a welcoming and safe community for all. Please see below for more information about local ICE presence and how you can support vulnerable neighbors in your community and in Minnesota.
Take care of yourselves and each other.
In solidarity,
The East Bay Housing Organizations Team
