EBHO’s Berkeley Committee focuses on city-level policies and funding to shape development, preserve low-income housing, and protect tenants in Berkeley. Currently, the Committee is working on a broad range of 3P’s policies to produce more affordable homes, preserve existing affordable homes, protect tenants and prevent homelessness.
We are working on BART Transit Oriented Development (TOD), particularly assuring significant affordable housing is created at the two Berkeley BART stations at different stages in the development process (Ashby and North Berkeley). We are working on a COPA/TOPA policy for Berkeley which would allow tenants and qualified nonprofits to have a right of notice when their buildings are put up for sale and a right of first refusal to match any market offer, buy their buildings and keep them affordable. We support funding mechanisms to support homeless services and to make it easier to pass public infrastructure and affordable housing bonds.
