Great news! SB 567 has been signed into law.
What’s next?
Governor Gavin Newsom signed SB 567 into law on September 30, 2023.
SB 567 builds on existing law — amending the Tenant Protection Act (TPA), also known as AB 1482 – to better protect California’s low-income renters from unjust evictions and to create enforcement mechanisms that do not exist in current law.
This bill makes important clarifying changes to the three “no-fault” just-cause provisions to close commonly exploited loopholes that include substantial rehabilitation, owner move-in, and taking units off the rental market, and enhances the ability of tenants to defend themselves during eviction by giving them the right of action and allowing local governments to enforce provisions.
