Reimagining Community Safety & the Role of Transformative Housing Solutions
May 21, 2021 @ 12:00 pm – 1:30 pm
It is a skill to imagine our communities have everything they need to thrive, name those needs, and then connect them to the action we need to take together to ensure that the imagined world can become our reality. Over the last year, Black-led community protest has produced a nationwide reckoning with the role of policing, how we create safety and security, and increased demands for defunding the police and investing in housing, healthcare, and healing at the scale needed for collective safety. What do we need to expand to achieve this? What role does affordable housing advocacy have in this?
Join EBHO staff in reviewing how demands to defund the police and reimagine public safety connect to the work of housing justice, reflect on the needs in your community, and name the specific home-full housing solutions needed to create the conditions our communities need. Participants will engage in collective reflection, a small-group discussion, and leave with ideas of how you can advocate for collective community safety that includes quality, affordable homes for all low-income people, rooted in just communities.
