Creative People-Powered Places: Resident Placekeeping Meets Real Estate in Oakland

May 27th @ 5:00 pm 8:00 pm

East Bay Asian Local Development Corporation (EBALDC) Logo

Hosted by East Bay Asian Local Development Corporation, ARTogether, Chapter 510

A healthy neighborhood allows residents to live, work, shop and play within, and have the collective power to shape the future of their community.

To build and sustain healthy neighborhoods requires vision, stewardship, and powerful stories; all of which artists, creatives, and culture-bearers are uniquely positioned to support. When commercial space operators invest in deep reciprocal relationships with artists, creatives, and culture-bearers as commercial tenants, they anchor key collaborators who can engage and connect community members and build collective power to advance broad community goals.

Join us for this interactive and creative conversation, bringing together perspectives from both commercial real estate and resident-led placemaking professional, alongside the creative practitioners who hold space as our commercial real estate tenants and deep collaborators in neighborhood change and stewardship work. Together we will share stories and explore proven strategies for cultivating robust tenant/ collaborator relationships, technical supports, neighborhood outcomes-oriented leasing policies and practices that keep commercial real estate affordable and keep community in place.

About EBALDC: In addition to being Oakland’s largest nonprofit provider of affordable housing, EBALDC is also the East Bay’s largest nonprofit owner of commercial spaces with over 300,000 square feet of space for over 114 community-serving nonprofit organizations and small businesses. Through the COVID-19 pandemic, EBALDC deeply supported tenants in physical and operational adaptations, resulting in a 95% commercial occupancy rate despite dramatic shifts in the commercial landscape.

EBALDC also catalyzes resident-led placemaking and creative organizing with networks of partners, recognizing that art, culture, and creativity are effective tools to strengthen social connections, resident health outcomes, and positive neighborhood identity.
