Thank You, Photos, and Recap: EBHO's Affordable Housing Week 2014

Photos and Highlights from a Great Affordable

Housing Week - Thanks to You!

Thank you for making EBHO's 18th Annual Affordable Housing Week one of our best yet!  Between May 9 and 18, our 23+ great events showed 10 cities and well over 3,000 people that together we build so much more than housing: we are growing a movement that is built to last. From grand openings to art exhibitions, tours with hard hats and bike helmets, panels led by affordable housing residents and consumers, and not least of all, EBHO's SOLD OUT 30th Anniversary Celebration, the Week raised awareness, celebrated successes, and helped us strengthen our network for action!

Demonstrating Impact and Taking Action for Affordable Homes:

During this year's Affordable Housing Week, we celebrated the opening or reopening of 444 affordable homes. We also organized tours of an additional 516 homes, some of which were still under construction. Given that these numbers include a lot of family housing, these units will house over 1,500 people. Most of these homes were developed with Redevelopment funds, which have now been eliminated, and voter approved bonds (Prop. 1C), which are now depleted.

It is urgent to push for a sustainable source of funding for affordable housing to ensure that we can celebrate communities benefitting from affordable housing during Affordable Housing Week for years to come. Please take action now: Click here to get involved in our campaign for a dedicated source of funding in Alameda County, and click here to learn about how you can give feedback on your community's Housing Element to promote equitable housing policies. Read here and watch here to learn about advocating for a share of the State's Cap and Trade dollars for affordable homes.

Remembering, Celebrating, and Honoring Ollie Arnold
It is with deep sadness that we recognize the passing of dedicated EBHO member and passionate advocate for low-income people, Ollie Arnold. Ollie passed away in May right before Affordable Housing Week. We both mourn her sudden loss and celebrate her continuing powerful and positive presence and impact in our community. She was loved by all who knew her. She was a dear friend and dedicated colleague, an anchor in our community, and a wonderful, effervescent human being.

Ollie was an experienced Housing Outreach Coordinator at Eden I&R, and a key part of housing programs across Alameda County. Her strong sense of teamwork and service made her a leader in EBHO's membership and in the broader community. She was an instrumental part of EBHO's annual Affordable Housing Week for well over 10 years. She organized the annual event with Eden I&R and the Oakland Housing Authority to appreciate rental property owners and managers, and offer a day of training and resources.

We send love and support to her family and friends.  Click here for a full obituary, and click here for a tribute video made by her friends and colleagues at Eden I&R and the Oakland Housing Authority.

Finally, another heartfelt thank you to EBHO's Board of Directors for their hard work and leadership, to our volunteers, and our amazing interns, Mika Matsumoto and Mariana Santiago.

We'll see you next year!
