Grand Opening of Hana Gardens
May 13 @ 11:30 am - 2:00 pm
The City of El Cerrito and Eden Housing are proud to partner on Hana Gardens, 62 units of new affordable housing for seniors in El Cerrito. Along with brand new housing, the development also honors the Japanese who were interned during World War II by preserving the character of the Contra Costa Florist building, providing interpretive panels in a beautiful Japanese Heritage Plaza.
The four-story, 63-unit senior affordable housing development, includes 1,997 square feet of street-level commercial space which Eden has leased to the El Cerrito Senior Center. The public spaces were inspired by the single-story Contra Costa Florist building, which Eden renovated in line with the building’s original design. This property includes Heritage Plaza- a beautiful public courtyard that honors the rich history of the Japanese American influence on the commercial flower industry. “Hana” is often translated from Japanese into English as “flower.” The goal of this event is to showcase the unique design of this property and celebrate our partnerships, residents and community. We also hope to honor the history and tradition behind the property and its namesake by starting the event off with Taiko drummers and scheduling volunteer groups to do paper flower crafts with the residents at the event.
